Wimbledon 2018 kicks off on the Big Screen at Lyric Square

Sun, cream and strawberries were the order of the day as two weeks of free live Wimbledon screenings kicked off at Lyric Square on Monday, 2 July.

Hundreds of fans enjoyed the best seat in the house, under glorious blue skies on the first Monday of the world’s most-loved tennis tournament. And not even Andy Murray’s late, injury-enforced withdrawal could dampen the spirits.

The free live screenings of Wimbledon will be shown from 12pm for every day of the competition from SW19, as part of the HammersmithLondon Summer Festival.

The action came thick and fast on day one. The lunch time crowds enjoyed a masterclass from eight-time winner Roger Federer, playing in his 20th Wimbledon, as he dispatched Dusan Lajovic, in straight sets, in just 79 minutes.

Later in the day, tennis enthusiasts lapped up the drama on the Big Screen, including wins for Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams, as attentive HammersmithLondon staff dished out the sun cream to protect the public from the searing heat.

“What a way to spend a lunch break,” remarked one satisfied customer. “You can’t beat Wimbledon on a beautiful British summer’s day.”

Patricia Bench, BID Director, HammersmithLondon, said: “We couldn’t have asked for better weather to kick off our Wimbledon screenings and it looks like it’s going to be set fair for the whole two weeks, which is unheard of! The Wimbledon live screenings are always a very popular event. It looks like it’s going to be a fantastic fortnight.”

The award-winning HammersmithLondon Summer Festival is celebrating its 11th year with an array of free live performances, events, plus entertainment and sport on the Big Screen. You can see the full list of exactly what’s happening here.
