Don Giovanni draws in a capacity crowd at Lyric Square
A capacity crowd packed into Lyric Square for a live screening of the Royal Opera House’s performance of Don Giovanni last night.
The huge audience came in from all around West London to enjoy a wonderful production of Mozart’s dazzling opera. Don Giovanni is the tale of a serial seducer whose dangerous liaisons lead to dark and tragic consequences. The emotion of the story wasn’t lost on the crowd at Lyric Square whose rousing applause at the end of every spine-tingling scene could be heard far and wide.
The audience, that spanned all generations both young and old, lapped up the enthralling drama and pitch-perfect singing on the Big Screen in Lyric Square.
“It’s an amazing production and it’s fantastic to see so many people out enjoying it together,” remarked one satisfied customer. “To see so many young families out watching the opera is fantastic.”
The performance, part of the HammersmithLondon Summer Festival, was the second free live screening from the Royal Opera House this year. Over 500 people enjoyed La Bohème at the end of last month, but there were even more at Lyric Square last night – proving the huge popularity of free live outdoor opera.
The two performances were part of the BP 2018 Big Screens programme, showing Royal Opera House productions up and down the country free of charge.
The HammersmithLondon Summer Festival continues this weekend with free live screenings of the Wimbledon finals. The women’s final will start at 2pm on Saturday, with the men’s showpiece being played at the same time on Sunday.
